Comfrey's Resilience

A story of bearing witness to the power and beauty of plants and Mother Nature intertwined...

One Spring while visiting a local Farmers Market, we caught our eye on a beautiful Comfrey plant. Known for its external medicinal uses, we were eager to add it to our living herb family. However, being in between a residential move, we were concerned that it would not survive container life well, as Comfrey thrives when it’s roots can grow freely and deeply.

Months later when our move was complete and the garden area was established; we revisited the Farmers Market hoping to obtain a Comfrey plant. Unfortunately, there was none on hand, but the Farmer offered to bring one of their young starter plants the following weekend. Seven days later, when we returned, we were quite surprised when the Farmer gifted us a Comfrey plantlet!  They were concerned that with the brink of Fall upon us, the young plant may not survive, but they were willing to offer it to us at no cost.

After arriving back, we walked the garden with Comfrey until we found the spot that felt right; laid down Tobacco and offered a prayer as we welcomed the plant to its new home. Within one week, we noticed a few of the leaves begin to falter. However, knowing the medicinal strength that Comfrey exudes, we were optimistic that it would survive.

Over time, we carefully observed and tended to Comfrey as the warmth of the season quickly faded; Fall turned into the depths of Winter, adverse conditions and hard-freezes came and went. Our little Comfrey plant showed signs of struggle, yet it was persevering.

Then finally the light, warmth and renewal of Spring embraced Comfrey like only Mother Nature could; ushering in life, strength and nourishment. Comfrey radiated, and with each day that passed, it grew larger and beautifully… We’d witnessed true resilience!

What started off as an unexpected gift, flourished into an offering of inspiration, and a true lesson of purpose and survival.

That season we returned to the Farmers Market and compensated the generous Farmer for the gift; our thriving & resilient Comfrey.

Comfrey (Symphytum officinale) is a wonderful medicinal plant for topically healing wounds, sprains, and joint pain. It can also subside symptoms associated with inflammation, arthritis and skin issues.

Comfrey has become one of Woven in Nature Healing Tradition’s plant allies. With gratitude and pure intentions, we incorporate the essence of its medicinal gifts into our natural products.
